U.S. Navy, Lt. Thomas Mullen Adams, 27, of La Mesa, CA

Two British Navy helicopters collided over the Persian Gulf. Seven on board were killed, including Lt. Thomas Mullen Adams.

Adams' parents were in Germany visiting their daughter when a neighbor called to tell them their son had been killed.

Adams had been assigned as an exchange officer with the Royal Navy's 849 Squadron since October. The squadron's detachment is currently embarked on the Royal Navy aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal.

A neighbor of Adams' family, Mary Frasure, remembered him as "an adorable boy. Just darling."

U.S. Army, Spc. Jamaal R. Addison, 22, of Roswell, GA

Addison was one of at least two soldiers from the 507th Maintenance Company killed Sunday during fighting in Iraq. His step-grandmother described him as the family’s computer guru.

“He was just a mild-mannered, quiet child,” Jackie Roberts told WGST radio in Atlanta. “Before he enlisted, he was in Bible study every Wednesday night.”

Addison had a 2-year-old son and 3-year-old daughter. His family could not be immediately reached for comment.

“He had a duty to perform,” Roberts said, “but it was hard for (the family) to understand.”

U.S. Marines, Maj. Jay Thomas Aubin, 36, of Waterville, ME

One of four U.S. Marines who died when their CH-46 Sea Knight helicopter crashed about 9 miles south of Iraqi border town Umm Qasr.

Nancy Chamberlain felt a sense of foreboding March 20, 2003 watching television reports that a chopper had gone down. She thought of her 36-year-old son, Jay Aubin, who fell in love with flying as a small boy, who joined the Marines and went to college purely to become a pilot. He was bursting with pride when told he was in line to fly the presidential helicopter, when he returned to his Yuma, Ariz., base.

Watching the relentless television images, Chamberlain said, "We just knew."

Chamberlain got the official word on Friday morning when Marines showed up at her door.

Now she struggles with trying to find the right words to describe her son, and to preserve his memory for his two children, Alicia, 10, and Nathan. 7, who live in Yuma with their mother, Rhonda, a former Marine.

"He went with bells on," his mother said. "He's a Corps man through and through."

One of four U.S. Marines who died when their CH-46 Sea Knight helicopter crashed about 9 miles south of Iraqi border town Umm Qasr.

Alyse Beaupre, 31, said her brother was a graduate of Illinois Wesleyan University and a member of the Roman Catholic church in St. Anne's, about 60 miles south of Chicago.

University registrar Jack Fields said he was surprised when the young man with the shock of unruly red hair enlisted in the Marines.

"The image that comes to mind is from 'The Andy Griffith Show,' and Opie walking down the road with a fishing pole," he said.

U.S. Marines, Sgt. Michael E. Bitz, 31, of Port Hueneme, CA

Killed near An Nasiriyah when one Iraqi unit indicated it was giving up, then opened fire when the Marines approached.

Bitz, a father of four, joined the Marines in 1995 at the urging of his mother, who said her son drifted from job to job and lacked focus after graduating from high school.

Bitz was a member of the 2nd Assault Amphibious Battalion in the 2nd Marine Division from Camp Lejeune, N.C. His wife, Janina, gave birth to twins in February, 2003, just weeks after her husband received his orders. Bitz has two other children, ages 2 and 7.

Bitz's mother, Donna Bellman, told the Ventura County Star that she was never worried about her son's safety until war was declared on Iraq. She felt "something wasn't right."

"I had this terrible feeling since he shipped out in January ... I kept trying to picture a white bubble around him to keep him safe," she said. "But it didn't work."

I watched the flag pass by one day,
It fluttered in the breeze.
A young Marine saluted it,
And then he stood at ease.

I looked at him in uniform
So young, so tall, so proud,
With hair cut square and eyes alert
He'd stand out in any crowd.

I thought how many men like him
Had fallen through the years.
How many died on foreign soil?
How many mothers' tears?

How many pilots' planes shot down?
How many died at sea?
How many foxholes were soldiers' graves?
No, freedom isn't free.

I heard the sound of Taps one night,
When everything was still,
I listened to the bugler play
And felt a sudden chill.

I wondered just how many times
That Taps had meant "Amen,"
When a flag had draped a coffin
Of a brother or a friend.

I thought of all the children,
Of the mothers and the wives,
Of fathers, sons and husbands
With interrupted lives.

I thought about a graveyard
At the bottom of the sea
Of unmarked graves in Arlington.
No, freedom isn't free.

Enjoy Your Freedom & God Bless Our Troops
